The final production, my own personal favorite, gives the audience the pleasure of seeing Cagney and Ruby Keeler as dance partners. The first two numbers feature young ingénues Dick Powell and Ruby Keeler. This is when Busby Berkeley’s magic takes over from Lloyd Bacon’s sharp direction with three magical and exquisite productions numbers, “Honeymoon Hotel,” “By a Waterfall,” and Shanghai Lil,” one more extravagant and grand than the other. The movie is divided into two halves, the first a backstage raucous comedy while the second half, really the final half hour, contains the three big musical highlights. Always behind the scenes and protecting his back with love sick eyes is his ever faithful secretary, Nan. Nan’s money grubbing roommate make a play for Chester as he remains too blinded by her beauty to see her true gold digging colors. First, his wife starts divorce proceedings only to change her mind when she thinks he is back in the money. Chester also has eyes for the ladies, unfortunately, they are for women who will only do him dirty. Chester is also taking a beating from his producers (Guy Kibbee and Hugh Herbert)who are fudging the books so the profits, of which Chester is suppose to get a percentage, are never there for him to collect. The three women in “Gold Diggers of 1933” lost their jobs, as did Warner Baxter in “42nd Street.” In “Footlight Parade,” Cagney’s pugnacious Chester Kent worries not only about hard times but about rivals stealing his productions before they even open. Unlike the glossy MGM fare, Warner’s musicals, though still escapist entertainment from life’s realities, did not ignore the hard times the world was facing. “Footlight Parade” was the last of Warner’s big three classic depression musicals released in 1933. Taking it a step further, he will mass produce these shows, called prologues, to movie palaces all over the country! It’s a business paradigm that cannot miss, at least in the movies. Sophisticated audiences will come in droves. Talkies are the new rage so why not produce an extravagant live production that precedes the movie. Kent comes up with what he believes is an extraordinary idea. James Cagney is Chester Kent, a penniless producer, with Joan Blondell as Nan Prescott, his trusty secretary and dependable right hand. It remains one of Warner Brothers great Depression era musicals, filled with Busby Berkeley’s overly impossible yet miraculous production numbers forcing you to sit there stunned and say simply, wow! “Footlight Parade” is all about what happens behind the scenes. The creative puzzle of putting a show together with just the right pieces, the excitement, the panic before facing the audience, the roar of the greasepaint, the smell of the crowd, the tears of joy, or sorrow, depending on the show’s success after the curtain comes down. There is something magical about what goes on before the curtain rises on opening night.

So consider this something of a PSA: If you want to give it a try, get your Wii U out of storage and blow the dust off it as soon as you can. With no physical release to keep it alive, Affordable Space Adventures dies with the eShop on March 27 - a devastating blow to video game preservation. And how could it be? The entire experience hinges on an oddball tech gimmick that was a commercial failure for Nintendo. Due to the fact that it was specifically built for the Wii U, it was never ported to another system. Unfortunately, the indie gem’s unbridled creativity is ending on a bittersweet note. To this day, I haven’t had as much fun with the system as I did dialing down by decelerator to keep my ship from bursting into flames. Affordable Space Adventures both highlighted how unique and underutilized it was. Even Nintendo seemed to give up on the idea by the end of the console’s lifespan, not utilizing it at all. Most games on the platform didn’t quite know what to do with the gamepad, throwing menus or maps on it. It’s the rare game for the system that understood how a second screen could be transformative. When it comes to Wii U games, Affordable Space Adventures is almost in a class of its own. It’s a tactile experience that really puts players in the cockpit without switching to a first-person perspective. Players have to keep track of meters like heat and electricity, fiddling with their two engines to make sure the ship runs smoothly at all times. Others are more complex, putting a unique systems management experience in the middle of a puzzle game. Some of those are simple, like controlling the ship’s scanner or deploying landing gear. By using the touch screen, players manage all of the ship’s functions while traveling around. The unique trick, though, is that the Wii U gamepad acts as the ship’s control panel. On the TV, the game plays out as a standard 2D puzzler where players have to navigate their ship around lasers, aliens, and more hazards. Naturally, that shakes out about as well as you’d expect and they’re stranded in space piloting a rickety ship. As its name implies, Affordable Space Adventures is about a galactic tourist who buys a cheap trip to the stars. “So for us here, this is a rare opportunity which can actually benefit this area and really bring much-needed resources and really it’s about being safe and being clean.”Ĭamacho said the zero-emissions aspect of the gondola ride, which is just over a mile, appeals to him. “Frankly, the other parts of downtown really probably get more of the share of resources and certainly more of the limelight,” he said. He said this part of downtown LA is often overlooked for development. He owns El Paseo Restaurant on Olvera Street, across from Union Station. However, others welcome the extra foot traffic, including Don Camacho. “I just can’t imagine the seniors running into the Dodger crowds right at the entranceway to the park.” “There is a lot of seniors in Chinatown and the building I live in is a senior building and we walk and use the park a lot,” she said. Rico said the proposed gondola will sail right past her apartment building and she is worried the project will speed up gentrification in the neighborhood, forcing long-time residents to leave and businesses to shutter. Rico said her walks in the park are a valuable chance to enjoy nature, but she is worried those peaceful strolls may be disrupted with the proposed Los Angeles Aerial Rapid Transit, a gondola system that would carry baseball fans between Union Station and Dodger Stadium, with a stop in Chinatown, next to the state park. “When you go to the park, you see green, you see animals, you see birds that maybe you have never seen before in your life.” It’s hot, it’s hard, it’s dirty,” Rico said. “When you’re living in Los Angeles, especially in downtown LA, you live in a sea of cement. Metro is partnering with LA ART on the project and expected to release a Draft Environmental Impact Report to the public this summer.Longtime Chinatown resident, Julie Rico, is worried the gondola project will intensify gentrification in the neighborhood, increase rents and force businesses to shutter.LA ART estimates the gondola ride would pull 3,000 cars off the road before and after a Dodger game and encourage people to take public transportation to games and special events.Los Angeles Aerial Rapid Transit (LA ART) is a proposed gondola system that would carry baseball fans from Union Station to Dodger Stadium, with a stop in Chinatown. Um, and you maybe full of regret, you know, kind of like press sand on something and be like, oh shit. And just also to let you know if you are someone yeah. And so that's a, that's a really big intro for today's episode. Um, and why we'll be sharing a little bit about our experiences as well. And that's why we think these stories are important. Um, and yeah, no from us anyway, not from us. Uh, sadly in many cases in, in this, in this particular episode, it's kind of sad that many of us have this experience, but at least we can find a little bit of comfort in knowing that we're not alone in this and that there is no shame. And I think the reason why these stories and why we asked for stories is because they can be really healing when we get to come out of our little corner of shame that we've been existing in and alone and realize that there are other people who have walked a similar road, um, and. Um, just because, you know, stories are such a powerful thing. Well, I just also want to thank you so much to everyone who was brave enough to send their story in. So much, but, um, it's another thing to press record and know that, um, you know, hundreds of people are going to be less than Like it's, it's one thing for us to, um, shoot the shit on Marco polo about this stuff, which we, which we have done. I think Gabby and I are both feeling a little bit nervous about talking about it in different ways. Um, so we understand that it's a really vulnerable thing to talk about. How this, how the culture of talking about sex and sexuality has affected our lives as we've maybe unpacked some of that teaching some of that, some of those messages. Um, and so many of us are still a work in EIT. And it also is quite telling that there were more emails and voice notes this time, because I think that this topic in particular is so difficult. And I suppose that all of the emails and voice notes that we got were from women. I mean, it goes to say it was with, I'd say it. So we, um, I guess that's where we're coming from is we want to talk about the culture of, um, Of that, of, of where that has come from and how it has affected particularly women. And I think particularly where women are often more scrutinized, more heavily sexualized, uh, than men and given all kinds of mixed messages about their sexuality. But really is a narrative around sexuality, that has often bled into mainstream culture. But I guess what we're talking about here is a culture that we have observed and experienced more so in faith and church communities, um, and in evangelicalism, where it has been pretty prevalent.Īnd where it really, I think it is derived from is in those, in that context. We know that lots of you obviously, because we've heard from you have had experiences and understand what this term means. Um, and I think, yeah, it's important that we maybe give a little bit of context to what we mean by purity culture. Um, so if that just feels like it might be a bit much for you, then we absolutely understand if you just need to opt out of this episode. Um, but we, we also just thought it was really important that we share with you that those are things that have come up in the, in the stories that we've received and the things that we're going to talk about today. Uh, a really honest and important conversation. And it's, uh, hopefully if he, uh, feels safe enough to listen, um, this we hope is going to be. Um, and so with that, we want to make sure that we put a little bit of a content warning in that, uh, during this episode, we're going to be talking about all things around sexuality, um, stuff that comes up around sexual abuse, um, abuse of authority, death, shim, all kinds of stuff. Um, but also we're sharing your stories, stories that you submitted to us by email or voice notes. Um, and I think it's important that right from the get go, we give a little bit of a trigger warning, um, that the things that we are going to talk about today, um, are partly our commentary on our own experience around purity culture, which will give some context to in a second. Um, we're just gonna launch right in to tell you that this week we are going to be talking a bit purity culture. Heihachi, too late to realize Kazuya's devilish power, was soundly beaten and was thrown by Kazuya into the same ravine where he was thrown by Heihachi.Įventually, Heihachi comes back and reclaims his place after Kazuya, seemingly the hero of the first story, turns out to be even worse of a person than he is, so after his victory he kills Kazuya by throwing him into a volcano. Having been thrown into a ravine when he was only five years old by Heihachi himself, Kazuya made a Deal with the Devil, survived, and trained himself so he could exact revenge. As it turns out, the tournament winner is in fact his disgruntled son Kazuya Mishima. It begins with the Mishima Zaibatsu, a conglomerate of the Mishima family, run by Heihachi Mishima, sponsoring a tournament called King of Iron Fist. note That is, without any significant sequel gaps or continuity reboots. While fighting games are not traditionally known for rich storylines, Tekken holds the Guinness World Record for the longest-running sequential video game storyline, period. This complexity has earned it many fans around the globe and extreme success in arcades (and later in console ports), and the series has a reputation for being one of the most challenging, technical yet highly rewarding fighting games a person can play. For example, main character Kazuya has over 60 moves by Tekken 7, and that's not even getting into characters like Yoshimitsu or Hwoarang, who have stances with their own dedicated movelists. Combos and special inputs are thus a bit more intuitive than other fighting games, making the series surprisingly accessible for newcomers.Ĭharacters also have massive movelists, often far exceeding almost every other fighting game series. If you press a button that uses the right arms, then the character will almost certainly strike with that arm. Punches and kicks are uniquely mapped to the four face buttons, with each one corresponding to a limb. If someone punches for example, you can just duck under it entirely. The game makes judicious use of extremely precise hitboxes for all of its characters and places heavy emphasis on frame data. Tekken is renowned for its fast paced and demanding gameplay. "Iron Fist") is one of Bandai Namco Entertainment's most popular franchises and the most successful 3D fighting game series of all time, such that it is a Trope Codifier for that subgenre. Giselle also discovers uncharacteristically haughty behavior and finds pleasure in mistreating Morgan. Malvina is now the town's evil queen with magical powers. Morgan is happy with their new life, and Robert believes himself to be a brave adventurer. By the next day, the town has transformed into a fantasy kingdom called Monrolasia. To help Morgan fit in, Giselle tries to get her elected as the ball's princess but ends up unintententionly embarrassing Morgan, resulting in a falling out between them.Īfter consulting with her chipmunk friend Pip, Giselle decides to use the wand to wish her family's life to be a "perfect fairy tale". Giselle meets Malvina Monroe, the arrogant head of the town council, and learns that she is hosting a fairytale-themed ball, where Malvina's son Tyson is the ball's elected prince. King Edward and Queen Nancy visit from Andalasia to present them with a wish-granting wand. The moving brings poor first experiences for them: their new house needs renovations, Robert has to commute to continue his job, and Morgan feels like an outcast at her new school. However, life in Manhattan is starting to drag on them, so Giselle plans to move the family to Monroeville, a suburban town. Giselle, Robert, and Morgan Philip are living happily together with their baby Sofia. Unlike its predecessor, the film received mixed reviews from critics, who mostly praised Adams's performance but felt it lacked the charm of its predecessor. The film was officially announced in December 2020, with the cast joining in spring 2021 and filming taking place in Ireland between May and July that year.ĭisenchanted premiered at the El Capitan Theatre in Los Angeles on November 16, 2022, and was released in the United States via Disney+ on November 18. By 2017, it was announced Adams had signed on to reprise her role and filming was set to begin that summer, but it never came to fruition. Talks of an Enchanted sequel began in early 2010, but the project languished in development hell for several years. Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz returned as the film's songwriters, while Menken also composed the score, and Adams served as a producer of the film alongside Barry Josephson and Barry Sonnenfeld. They are joined by newcomers Maya Rudolph, Yvette Nicole Brown, Jayma Mays, Kolton Stewart, Oscar Nunez, and Griffin Newman. Co-produced by Walt Disney Pictures, Josephson Entertainment, and Right Coast Productions, it is the sequel to the 2007 film Enchanted.Īmy Adams, Patrick Dempsey, James Marsden, and Idina Menzel reprise their roles from the first film, with Gabriella Baldacchino replacing Rachel Covey (who makes a cameo as a different character). The mice in that film had personalities and intelligence, but they didn't talk or play a massive role in the story.Disenchanted is a 2022 American live-action/ animated musical fantasy comedy film directed by Adam Shankman and written by Brigitte Hales, based on a story by Richard LaGravenese and the writing team of J. Kenneth Branagh's Cinderella is probably the best indication of how Rajah and the other animal sidekicks will be handled in this film. Although The Jungle Book managed this successfully, that story literally cannot be told any other way, Aladdin can. Talking animals are harder to pull off in live-action, especially when they are interacting with human characters. Therefore, there should be no problem including them in this film, but a character like Iago is different. Rajah and Abu have personalities, but they don't talk. But with these live-action adaptations, Disney has to make some careful choices. Abu, Iago and Rajah are all part of what made Aladdin a worthy entry in the Disney Renaissance. Jasmine will probably be shown petting or playing with the tiger a few times and that will be it.ĭisney's animated movies are famous for their animal sidekicks, and Aladdin is no exception. If he is still to be included in the adaptation, my assumption is that he will have a diminished role and only show up in a few scenes just to sate the audience's demand for adherence to the original movie. In the animated version, Rajah acts as Jasmine's loyal friend and fierce protector. The live action adaptation will definitely benefit from the addition of Dalia since Jasmine is the only named female character in the original film, but fans don't want that to come at the expense of Rajah. If this information is true, it appears we don't have an either/or situation between the tiger and Nasim Pedrad's Dalia. According to 's sources, Jasmine's loyal pet Rajah will indeed be in the film, as the animal sidekicks are part of what gives the original animated Aladdin its magic.
